This is a voluntary, unpaid role: 3 to 5 hours a week (more around key parliamentary moments), remote and UK-based. Agreed expenses are reimbursed.

- Term: 12 months, reviewed at six months
Turn our campaigns into clear asks and put them in front of the MPs, peers and officials who can act on them.
About Football Action Network
Football Action Network (FAN) is a community interest company set up in 2026 to use football for community action. We work as a partner to clubs, club foundations, community groups and campaigners, helping them do more of what they already do well. We are not a regulator or a think tank.
Our work sits under three headings: We Protect, We Unite and We Amplify. In our first year that means inclusive community football leagues, events such as our national tournament, and campaigns on online harms in football and diversity in senior football roles.
FAN is volunteer-led, with heads of department across engagement, advocacy, comms, research, income and operations.
Why this role exists
Our campaigns only lead to change if the people who make decisions hear about them at a point when they can act. We have the networks and the stories, but no one yet whose job it is to turn a campaign into a clear ask, put it in front of the right MP, peer or official, and follow it up.
FAN is non-party-political. We work with anyone, from any party, who wants to make football fairer and safer.
What you'll be responsible for
- An advocacy plan. In your first two months, agree with the Chair which policy changes we're pushing for over the next 12 months, who can make each one happen, and the moments in the parliamentary calendar where we can make our case. We aim to run two campaigns well rather than many thinly, so expect to say no to some things.
- Political relationships. Identify and build relationships with the MPs, peers, advisers and officials who matter for our campaigns, across all parties. This includes exploring whether an All-Party Parliamentary Group is the right vehicle for our online harms work.
- Briefings and asks. Oversee short, evidence-based briefings for each campaign, working with our research lead on the evidence and our comms lead on the wording. Every briefing ends with a specific ask the reader can act on.
- Watching and responding. Track debates, consultations, select committee inquiries and legislation that touch our campaigns. When something comes up, decide quickly whether we respond and make sure we're ready to.
- Working across FAN. Agree with the engagement and comms leads before any public figure or politician is approached, so we speak with one voice and no one is contacted twice.
- Records and reporting. Keep political contacts and conversations in HubSpot with a next step for each. Send the Chair and board a short monthly update covering meetings held, responses submitted, commitments secured and what's coming up.
- Building a small team. As the work grows, recruit and support volunteers to help with research, monitoring and briefings.
What success looks like after 12 months
- An agreed advocacy plan for our two lead campaigns, reviewed quarterly
- An agreed number of meetings held with MPs, peers or officials
- An agreed number of consultation responses or evidence submissions made
- At least one public commitment, question, debate mention or policy change we can point to
- Every key political relationship in HubSpot with an owner and a next step
What we're looking for
Essential
- A working understanding of how decisions get made in UK politics, at Westminster and in government departments
- Experience in public affairs, policy, campaigning or a parliamentary office. Tell us about a time your work changed a decision
- Able to write a clear, short briefing that a busy MP will read
- Comfortable building relationships across parties
Desirable
- Experience of the devolved parliaments in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
- Knowledge of football governance, online safety or equality policy
- Experience setting up or supporting an All-Party Parliamentary Group
- Experience leading volunteers
What we offer
- A leadership seat in a new organisation, with a real say in what we campaign for
- Direct work with the founder, CEO and comms team
- Expenses covered under our expenses policy
- A reference and a defined senior role you can point to
Before you apply
- This is an unpaid role.
- You'll sign our volunteer agreement and code of conduct, and follow our data protection policy.
- Please tell us about any current roles, paid or voluntary, with political parties, public affairs agencies, football bodies or campaign groups so we can manage any conflict of interest openly. Party membership is no barrier, but you'll represent FAN on a non-party basis.
How to apply
Apply through the role page on Football Action Network's website: fill in the form and attach your CV. FAN is taking applications on a rolling basis and will start reviewing applications on 23 October 2026.
In your application: You might tell us about a time your work changed a political or policy decision and what you did, and why FAN, and why now. Please also mention any current roles we should know about (see "Before you apply").
