About the Organisation

Established in 1996, Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation is the official charity arm of Middlesbrough Football Club. Through programmes delivered under the banners of Education and Employability, Health and Wellbeing, and Social Inclusion, the Foundation works to inspire confidence and inspire hope across the communities of Teesside.

Over nearly three decades, the Foundation has built a consistent presence across the Tees Valley — between 2019 and 2024 alone it delivered over £20 million in social return on investment, engaged with more than 38,000 participants, and ran over 25,000 sessions. Its work spans football provision through to support for people living with dementia, with a Together 2024-28 strategy guiding its continued growth and impact.

About the Role

The Finance Manager plays a key role in the day-to-day financial management of the Foundation, ensuring accurate and timely financial information, robust financial controls and efficient finance processes.

Working closely with the Head of Finance and Administration, the postholder will be responsible for preparing monthly management accounts, cash-flow forecasts and financial information to support budgeting, forecasting and decision-making across the Foundation. The role also oversees key financial processes including payroll, payments, expenses, internal recharges and financial systems.

The Finance Manager will coordinate and review the day-to-day work of the Finance Coordinator, ensuring financial transactions are processed accurately and that effective financial records and controls are maintained. The postholder will work closely with budget holders and colleagues across the Foundation, providing practical financial support and helping promote strong financial management throughout the organisation, while also supporting the Head of Finance and Administration with year-end accounts, external audit, funder reporting and the continued development of the Foundation's financial systems.

What You'll Do

Management Accounting and Financial Planning

Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts, including reconciliations, variance analysis and supporting schedules, for review by the Head of Finance and Administration
Prepare and maintain monthly cash-flow forecasts, monitoring the Foundation's cash position and flagging significant movements or emerging issues
Support the annual budgeting and periodic reforecasting processes, working with budget holders to prepare and maintain detailed budgets and forecasts
Manage the monthly recharge process and other internal cost allocations, ensuring expenditure and income are appropriately allocated across the Foundation
Provide financial information and practical support to budget holders, helping them understand financial performance and manage their budgets effectively

Financial Operations and Controls

Oversee day-to-day financial processes, including payroll, expenses, supplier payments, HMRC payments, treasury activities and compliance with the Foundation's financial policies and procedures
Ensure balance sheet accounts and other financial records are regularly reconciled and that outstanding items are investigated and resolved promptly
Coordinate, prioritise and review the day-to-day work of the Finance Coordinator, ensuring financial transactions are processed accurately and robust financial records and controls are maintained
Work with the Finance Coordinator to ensure effective allocation and delivery of day-to-day finance and administration activities across the wider team
Maintain the Foundation's financial systems and associated processes, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, reporting and internal controls

Year End, Auditing and Funding

Support the year-end accounts and external audit process by preparing reconciliations, schedules, supporting documentation and financial information
Produce financial information to support grant applications, project monitoring, funder claims and other reporting requirements
Support the production of financial information for the Foundation's Annual Financial Impact Report and other organisational reporting

Systems and Organisational Support

Support the Head of Finance and Administration in maintaining and improving financial policies, procedures, systems and controls
Use financial systems, Excel and other digital tools effectively to improve the efficiency and quality of financial processes and reporting
Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Foundation, providing financial information and support in a clear and accessible way
Deputise for the Head of Finance and Administration on routine operational finance matters during periods of absence
What They're Looking For

Essential:

Experience in a finance or management accounting role, including management accounts, reconciliations and variance analysis
Experience of budgeting, forecasting and cash flow, including working with budget holders
Experience of maintaining effective financial controls and accurate financial records, including payroll processes
Good standard of education, including literacy and numeracy
A recognised accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), progress towards qualification, or equivalent relevant experience
Strong management accounting, analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail
Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data analysis and financial modelling
Strong IT and financial systems skills
Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
High levels of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information
Eligible to work in the UK
A satisfactory basic DBS check will need to be completed
Ability and willingness to work flexibly where required to meet key financial deadlines
Commitment to the Foundation's values and to creating a positive and inclusive working environment
Commitment to working occasional evenings and weekends, including match days for Middlesbrough FC Men's and Women's teams

Desirable:

Experience of coordinating the work of others, managing priorities and reviewing work
Experience of providing financial information and support to non-finance colleagues
Experience in a charity, not-for-profit or similarly funded organisation, including restricted funds and funder reporting
Experience of supporting year-end accounts and external audit
Experience of grant claims, project reporting or funding applications
Experience of improving financial systems, processes and controls
People management experience
Fully qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA accountant
Relevant degree or other higher-level qualification
Advanced Excel and automation skills, including Power Query and Power Automate
Experience of Sage 50 Accounts, Sage Business Cloud Accounting or a comparable accounting system
Experience of Sage 50 Payroll or a comparable payroll system
Experience of financial reporting, dashboards or process automation
Knowledge of charity accounting and Charity Commission reporting requirements
Practical Details
Working Pattern: Part-time, 30 hours a week, Monday to Friday between 9am–5.30pm (to be agreed with the successful candidate)
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £26,000–£28,000 (£32,500–£35,000 FTE)
