Rotherham United Community Trust (formerly Rotherham United Community Sports Trust) has been a key part of Rotherham United FC for more than a decade. The Trust serves the diverse communities of Rotherham, promoting education, health, inclusion and sports participation through the power of football.
Its work includes a Sports College offering an alternative to traditional sixth form, school partnerships supporting PE, English and maths, employability programmes developed with the DWP, health and wellbeing initiatives covering mental health, weight management and fitness, social inclusion work with young people and disabled people, and sports participation through holiday camps, football development and women and girls' programmes.

About the Role
This post sits within the Trust's Senior Leadership Team and leads the Health & Wellbeing department. The Head of Department will be responsible for departmental leadership, strategic planning, partnership development, staff supervision, and securing funding to ensure the sustainability and growth of initiatives that meet local needs and national priorities.
Reporting to the Director of Development, the postholder is expected to operate autonomously and take the initiative in setting and managing their workload, with regular briefings, strategic meetings and an annual appraisal guiding performance.
The key objectives are to translate the Trust's strategic ambitions into actionable departmental plans, drive sustainable growth through diverse income streams and best use of the Trust's facilities, lead high-performing teams with robust quality and evaluation processes, and build strategic relationships across the region to develop innovative projects aligned with community needs.
What You'll Do
Department Leadership and Delivery
Develop and lead a departmental strategy aligned with the Trust's organisational strategy, with clear goals and tactics
Use data and insight to inform decision-making
Take overall responsibility for departmental KPIs linked to the Trust's strategic vision and ambitions
Ensure all programmes meet funder requirements, KPIs and quality standards
Build and lead delivery teams, ensuring effective planning, staffing and resource allocation
Take responsibility for the planning, spend and scrutiny of the departmental budget
Team Management
Line manage a team of department managers, coordinators, tutors and officers
Champion the Trust's vision, values and mission
Conduct regular one-to-ones and appraisals, and lead team and staff development
Promote a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture
Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with significant local, regional and national stakeholders
Represent the Trust at local, regional and national forums relevant to health and wellbeing
Collaborate with partners to co-design inclusive and responsive programmes
Funding and Business Development
Identify and secure funding through grants, sponsorships and tenders
Manage department budgets and ensure cost-effective delivery
Produce reports, case studies and presentations that demonstrate impact
Present to the Trust board and external organisations to raise awareness and share the department's impact
Safeguarding, Compliance and Quality Assurance
Ensure all activities comply with safeguarding, health and safety, GDPR and equality policies
Lead and embed a culture of safeguarding and inclusion across all staff and projects
Maintain accurate records and ensure all staff are DBS-checked and trained
Lead on monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance processes
What They're Looking For
Essential
Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience
Proven experience of leading community, health or physical activity-based programmes
Experience of partnership development and stakeholder engagement
Experience of managing significant budgets, financial forecasting, monitoring performance against targets, and preparing funding applications or business cases
Demonstrated ability to improve outcomes and implement innovative strategies
Experience of using data, insight and evaluation to design, improve and demonstrate the impact of programmes
Experience of line management, staff development and performance management
Experience of developing and implementing strategic plans and contributing to organisational growth
Level 3 Safeguarding qualification, or willingness to achieve it within six months of appointment
In-depth knowledge of local community needs and of national, regional and local strategies relating to health, physical activity and community development
Knowledge of risk management, health and safety, and safeguarding policies
Strong leadership, delegation and team management skills
Strong organisational skills and proficiency in Microsoft 365, digital collaboration tools and data management systems
Ability to prepare high-quality reports, business cases and presentations
Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
Ability to influence, negotiate and build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
High emotional intelligence, and the ability to make difficult decisions and resolve conflicts fairly
Resilient, proactive, adaptable, and committed to equality, diversity, sustainability, safeguarding and social inclusion
Comfortable working evenings and weekends when required
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work
Desirable
Subject-specific qualifications in physical activity delivery (e.g. Pilates, gym instructing) or community development
Experience of working on national or regional programmes
Experience of managing grant-funded projects and ensuring compliance with funder requirements
