Twinning Project
ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
The Twinning Project is a charity partnership between HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and professional football clubs that aims to twin every prison in England and Wales with a local professional club. Club community foundations, supported by prison PE officers, deliver an accredited football-based personal development programme in custody, with coaching, stewarding or refereeing qualifications that build communication, teamwork, leadership, resilience and employability skills. The aim is to improve wellbeing and behaviour in prison, cut reoffending and help people resettle, with the local club foundation offering 'through the gate' support after release. Since the UK launch in 2018 more than 70 clubs have been twinned with prisons or probation services, and the model has spread to the US, Italy, South Africa, Australia and Romania.
